There's no looking back!
The STA in STA Bikes stands for Sir Thomas Abney primary school, where the company was started by Andy Doyle and Sally Haywill. Both were parents of children at the school, and wanted to get cycling going there.

While Andy was completely at home on London roads, Sally had just rediscovered cycling around 1998, and wanted to be able to pass on some of its myriad benefits. They also wanted to try and do something about the awful metal gridlock that occurred daily at school drop off time. At this time the epidemic proportions of children suffering from asthma became publicised; and reducing dependency on car use seemed a good way of reducing pollution.

We applied for a Community Grant from the London Cycling Campaign in 2000, won £1400 -- which we used to pay for the first programme of cycle training at Sir Thomas Abney -- and we have never looked back since!

From these small beginnings, we have gone on to train thousands of children in Hackney's schools and hundreds of adults in the borough, as well as delivering cycle maintenance classes in youth clubs, outreach programmes on housing estates, family cycle clubs and training in the workplace.
